Bucket of Love

I learned a surprising truth about music when performing an acapella tune called “Bucket of Love.” Written by singer/songwriter Meg Tennant, this three-part harmony song carries a power all its own—a sound current of love.

Our trio prepared well. Tech rehearsal on Thursday night enlivened us. Every musician backstage came forward to listen, and they cheered us wildly at the end. 

Saturday night’s performance presented a different story for me, personally. I had a tough day, and by evening my body was tired and my voice felt weak. The other two singers came out of the gate on our first note with such force that I thought, I’m in trouble. 

I had a choice. Do I try to push the sound out, or do I relax into the resonance of my instrument, knowing some low notes would be barely audible?

I chose to stay true to my instrument in the moment and allow the sound to be.

Here’s the surprise: the feedback we got was so overwhelmingly positive, that I had to wonder what happened! What were they hearing out in the house? 

A trusted friend in the audience said something else came through our voices. 

The song’s musical flow and lyrical story carried outward on that powerful sound current, landing in the listeners. The truth is that music coming through a pure heart rides a wave, no matter what. Flow over push delivers buckets of love.

It takes both creator and performers to surrender ego and be conduits for that primal sound. It’s the love needed for our very survival—the one that assures us no matter how things may appear, all is well.

That is living as music.

Healing Sound Frequencies?

Is it possible to heal our body, feelings, or mind using sound frequencies? Sound therapists and scientists appear to be discovering the same truth. That frequencies of sound can at least invite, if not bring about, relaxation, release from anxiety, deeper sleep, and healing.

I’ve been experimenting with a low frequency sound (175 Hertz) to reduce pain. The following short sample combines 175Hz with other vibrations to encourage a theta brain wave state. Theta is the wave our brains produce when drowsy, lightly sleeping or in deep relaxation.

I aim for the most pure and refined sound in what I allow into my consciousness and what I give out through my voice. Granted that’s a tall order! But one step I can take is to test out sounds to see what beneficial impact they may have on me as an individual. 

The older I get, the more careful I am at taking anything from an outside source at face value. For example, the advent of AI has required even more alertness and attunement to my inner guidance. 

With that bit of a disclaimer, if you’d like to test out particular sound frequencies, the following is the best video I can find to sample nine currently recognized beneficial tones. (10 min).

DNA-Music Connection

In 1986, Japanese Geneticist Susumu Ohno discovered a remarkable connection between DNA and music. You’re probably familiar with the twisting ladder image of DNA. The rungs of the ladder consist of four molecules called nucleotides, represented by the letters ACTG. 

The order of nucleotide “bases” is all important to our genetic make-up. When we sequence a stretch of DNA, we read that code. However, Ohno took this a step further. He converted the four bases (ACTG) into specific notes (DGCA) and uncovered a musical score! DNA suddenly transformed into melody.

Check out this example of Ohno’s music based on an immunoglobulin gene (seriously, folks):

Ohno’s discovery prompted questions about the musicality of our genetic blueprint and the impact music might have on our genetic code. We’ve all become familiar with sound therapy to promoting healing. So why not consider an interplay of science and artistry through an interrelationship of DNA and music?

What I find most fascinating in this exploration is that human awareness is actually morphing, accepting a world where life is more fluid. Certainties like DNA as a locked-in sequence of life design, solid and inflexible, has changed. Now we witness how life sings.

And how can we apply this awareness to daily challenges? Perhaps we open to the belief that even our most rigid obstacles have “give” in them, or room to modulate, to use a musical term. 

Maybe that brick wall, the insolvable problem we believe we experience, is simply a set of frequencies that’s translatable into uplifting music. When we find our mind obsessing over a problem (like repeatedly pounding out a single note), we can invite a wholistic resolve. 

Like the feeling we get at the end of a glorious symphony, let’s land in harmonic balance, a sweet completion.

That is living as music.

Are You an Overtone or Fundamental Listener?


Overtones in music are higher frequencies that ring out above the fundamental frequency when a voice or instrument vibrates. Wolfgang Saus demonstrates this with an overtone variation of Pachelbel’s Canon sung in both bass and soprano at the same time. 

Watch how he leads the bass melody with his left hand, at first without overtones. Then he begins the melody in overtones and follows it with his right hand. Astounding and beautiful!

Some of us tune into overtones naturally, while others tend to perceive fundamental tones first. Are you a fundamental or overtone listener? You can find out quickly.

Dr. Peter Schneider designed a short test for pitch perception preference in which you listen with headphones to a series of two tones. After each set of tones, you click one of two buttons to indicate whether you heard the high pitch first, low pitch second—or the other way around.

I’m an extreme overtone listener which means I predominantly hear with my right brain. Of course, I encouraged my husband to take the test right away to confirm my suspicion. He’s an extreme fundamental listener, hearing first from his left brain. This means that while I’m listening for how to synthesize different parts to create a cohesive whole, he’s tuning in to process sequentially, in a more linear or step-by-step way.

Oh, the implications for marital miscommunication!

Have you ever spoken to someone and felt entirely misinterpreted? Perhaps that’s because we literally hear and filter vocal sounds from a different brain lobe. And we may well be listening to the sounds above the actual words.

Just for a day, let’s pay attention to how we listen when it comes to the music of what we hear. Whether we’re a fundamental or overtone listener, more awareness brings greater harmony and beauty into our lives.

When Silence Is Music

Lately, I’ve been drawn more deeply into silence. Emptiness and stillness feel both profoundly necessary and mysteriously comforting. This pull into the space between notes happens when silence is music.

Remember Paul Simon’s The Sound of Silence? Ecuadorian-born Giovanny Bautista performs this short— a beautiful Andean pan flute version:

A funny scene in the film Amadeus has Mozart seeking the Emperor’s approval for his recent work. The not-musically-savvy king repeats what Mozart’s enemy has put in his ear. There are, he says, too many notes. A baffled Mozart insists he’s written no more or less than required and asked which ones his majesty would remove.

In fact, we know Mozart as a master of silence between notes. 

Music would not exist without silence. The pauses allow us to experience and appreciate sound. Perhaps in a similar way, life’s pauses create a complete symphony over time.

When I hear a call from the depth of silence, it’s time to slow down the doing, the thinking, the writing, the planning. Get quiet on the inside, and listen. 

Once I stop doing my days in a way that’s become routine, I settle into silence. Then, inner sounds quietly emerge—the trill of a single flute, melodic phrase of an oboe, or even a brief brass quintet. 

Somehow, these sounds illuminate me, bringing me into harmony with a higher heartbeat. The result is balance, and my next direction becomes clear.

Ice Music

Terje Isungset is a pioneer and inventor of ice music. He creates his instruments—harps, drums, percussion, horns, and the iceophone (like a xylophone)—from blocks of harvested natural ice. He’s released 14 solo albums through his independent Norwegian record company and has toured internationally giving concerts with his Ice Quartet. Imagine being a roadie on that gig!

This ice concert, performed in the Arctic, was created in conjunction with Greenpeace to highlight the beauty of our oceans. It’s unlike anything you’ve heard: 

Instruments are crafted out of artic drift ice, sourced from and then returned to the sea. Glacial ice can be a thousand or a hundred thousand years old. Instrument-makers and musicians respect this ancient ice and that it has a sound of its own.

What can we learn about the collaboration of nature and human creativity from these artists?

Terje speaks of treating nature with respect and gentleness, just like the ice instruments, so it doesn’t break.

Ice cellist Ashild Brunvoll shares how nature has its own language. Ice instruments bring the sound of nature to human language, so people can understand. Nature gives us so much more than we can see.

As we enjoy a new year, some of us skiing on snow or making snow sculptures, we can pay attention to nature and connect in a deeper way. Perhaps we’ll even awaken to the music of ice.

A Secret Chord

A friend of mine recommended a new book on music as medicine called I Heard There Was a Secret Chord — which is a line from the iconic song “Hallelujah.” Daniel J. Levitin, neuroscientist and musician, explores the curative powers of music and its effects on the brain. 

I’d be surprised if you’ve never heard the Leonard Cohen tune since countless versions have been recorded. My favorite is still this rendition by KD Lang, performed before the song gained huge popularity:

Did you hear the chord progression spoken of in the lyrics? It goes like this, the fourth, the fifth / The minor falls, the major lifts… Perhaps this sequence impacts us in wordless ways.

Cohen once said this about the meaning of “Hallelujah”:

This world is full of conflicts…,but there are moments when we can transcend the dualistic system and reconcile and embrace the whole mess and that’s what I mean by Hallelujah. That regardless of what the impossibility of the situation is, there is a moment when you open your mouth and you throw open your arms and you embrace the thing and you just say ‘Hallelujah! Blessed is the name.’ And you can’t reconcile it in any other way except in that position of total surrender, total affirmation. 

Levitin celebrates the secret chord in his own way. He’s spent decades in neurological research, compiling studies to show how trauma, movement disorders, anxiety, depression, and Alzheimer’s have been improved by music. He helped Joni Mitchell recover from her brain aneurysm in 2015 by suggesting her nurses play a CD of her favorite artists, one that Joni compiled years earlier for Starbucks “Artists Choice” series.

Whether a secret chord brings healing through science or reconciliation through surrender, the result is the same.

How Sound Shapes Our World

Cymatics is the study of sound made visible, showing how sound shapes our world. We don’t usually see the effect vibration has on matter. Yet since 1967, when Swiss physician Hans Jenny published the first volume of Cymatics: The Study of Wave Phenomena, acoustic science has tested sound’s impact.

Experiments often involve what’s called a Chladni plate, a metal surface sprinkled with sand to show emerging patterns as related to sound frequency.

Listen and watch matter magically move in this brief demonstration (2 min):

What fascinates me about this phenomenon is the power that we, as sound producing beings, have on our environment. Ever seen a child shrink back at a teacher’s scolding? Or watched an athlete take in all the fans’ cheers for a sprint to victory?

Sound is powerful, whether individual or in a collective group. 

Certain frequencies produce patterns. Some tones form clearer images on the Chladni plate. This got me curious about resonance and imagery.

What if we’re more mindful of internal thought habits and external sounds in our environment?

Can we clear our mind with higher frequency thoughts? I’ve been experimenting. When stressed about a particular outcome, I choose to say “we’ll see,” as a more neutral viewpoint than gloom and doom. This increases my ability to ride life’s ups and downs and my confidence that all is in its right place.

Similarly, if we play an uplifting piece of music repeatedly, will we “see” a difference in our household? My husband and I notice that playing a sacred chant in our home on a regular basis calms us and our environment, including our cat Zoey.

When we recognize sound’s impact on matter, we look more closely at our choices.
We notice the effect of sound and try new thoughts, new tunes in order to stay uplifted.

That is living as music.

Tuning Forks

On a Zoom call I led recently, one of our team members mentioned that he’d just purchased tuning forks. We all wanted to hear the sound, so I suggested he strike one to end the meeting.

Does this vibration calm your mind or stop your thinking process for even a millisecond?
That, in itself, is valuable!

Tuning forks are being used to alleviate pain and to resolve all kinds of physical, emotional, and mental challenges. How is this possible?

Biofield Tuning is a sound therapy to relax and restore the body/mind by using the body’s natural intelligence to tune itself.

Biofield tuning works with our electrical system and the magnetic field surrounding our body. When forks are placed on or near the body, they register dissonance, as either resistance or turbulence. Practitioners listen for any changes in overtones or undertones of the sound.

Once dissonance is located, the fork is struck again and held in that spot until the resistance releases. Tuning fork vibrations create a harmonic that can shift a causative symptom. Mental and emotional habit patterns, as well as physical tensions, dissipate.

Amazing? Consider a time you attended a live musical performance and walked away feeling vibrant and uplifted. The sound rang through you, impacting your mood or state of mind long after the concert ended.

And, whether for healing or not, noticing sound’s impact on you is living as music.

Lakota Gratitude Song

Our neighbor, Steve, offered to trim our arborvitae shrub in exchange for collecting the branches. Steve is deeply connected to Native American culture here in Minnesota, where arborvitae is called “flat cedar” and burned in sweat lodges. Our dried branches would go to serve lodges further north.

When Steve arrived at our backyard, I was struck by his fully present and respectful approach—as if tree trimming was sacred work. When he finished, he asked if it would be OK to sing a Lakota gratitude song. And he did, heartily!

The care our neighbor put into trimming branches mirrors the respect these young men have for keeping Lakota culture alive through music. All three of them create harmony and bring awareness by honoring Native culture, ancestors, and all life.

What inspires your respect? What do you take great care in doing, even if it’s a small task?

Choosing to be more harmonious as we go about our day impacts others. Think of the small act of letting another car merge in front of you, or picking up trash where you walk your dog. Your choice creates a ripple effect, without you knowing where this courtesy lands next as others pass it along.

When we do this, we’re singing our own gratitude song, in our own way. We’re recognizing and acknowledging the gift of this person, this plant, this culture, this moment.

We’re demonstrating an appreciation for life.

That is living as music.
